History and Misson of ONAP

The Oneida Nation Arts Program (ONAP) was created by an act of the Oneida General Tribal Council in 1994. ONAP is in the Governmental Services Division (non-profit) of the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin. ONAP is part of a movement to rebuild the community’s spirit, to heal and rejuvenate the creative voice in the community, and to share our unique forms of expressions with others. We see informing the Oneida community, and the broader community, about authentic Native American arts and cultural interpretations as part of the healing process.

ONAP is also charged with the mission to promote diverse artistic expression within the community reflecting our heritage and spirit for future generations. While striving toward our mission, we encourage and nurture local artists, educate the community about the arts, and develop networks and resources with other communities.

ONAP is the only established tribal arts agency of its kind in the State of Wisconsin. Other Native nations in Wisconsin have museums, culture & language programs, dance troupes, and arts councils under development. However, ONAP is the only multi-disciplinary arts program with a dedicated staff, advisory board, and annual tribal buget. We hope to be the model for other tribal arts agencies.
